Dive into our essential guide to Constant Contact, where we meticulously dissect both the strengths and limitations of this email marketing tool.

The main goal is to help you determine if Constant Contact is the right tool for your business, or you need to explore alternatives.

We evaluate its celebrated integrations and pinpoint the exact areas where it might fall short, like time zone scheduling.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to enhance your marketing efforts with informed decisions.

And as a natural phenomenon of the universe, all good tools have their downsides.

Be sure to weigh things before getting a commitment.

How to Evaluate an Email Marketing Platform

When evaluating an email marketing platform, start with the user interface and ease of use—ensure it’s intuitive enough to create campaigns quickly.

Personalization and templates are crucial for engaging messages, while subscription and sign up forms should be easy to integrate and customize. Check the platform’s deliverability and email tools to ensure your messages reach their targets.

Integration with other tools is essential for efficient workflows. Reliable customer support and a well-stocked knowledge base can prevent many headaches. Don’t overlook analytics and insights; they’re key for refining email marketing strategies and measuring success.

Also, consider automation and scalability to ensure the platform can grow with your business. Finally, assess pricing and trial options to test features without immediate financial commitment. This approach will help you choose a platform that enhances your marketing efforts effectively.

1. User Interface and Ease of Use

Rating for Ease of Use

3/5

The user interface and ease of use are pivotal in navigating any email marketing platform. In this section, we’ll explore how this unique design choice impacts usability, including a look at the onboarding process that aims to ease new users into the platform despite some potential challenges with navigation.

User Interface

When diving into the user interface of email marketing platforms, you’ll notice that Constant Contact differs from many others. While most platforms utilize a sidebar for navigation, Constant Contact opts for a top nav bar.

Constant Contact Top Navigation Bar
Constant Contact Top Navigation Bar

This shift in design might be a slight adjustment if you prefer the traditional sidebar layout that other services offer. The sidebar approach, which I personally favor, tends to make navigation more intuitive, with easy access to various sections like campaign creation, list management, and analytics.

Although Constant Contact’s top nav bar aims to streamline the interface, it can take some getting used to if you’re more comfortable with the conventional layout found in other email marketing tools.

Onboarding

When you sign up for Constant Contact, you’re in for a smooth start. They’ve designed their account onboarding experience to be comprehensive yet unobtrusive, a standout feature that sets them apart from other platforms.

Instead of pushing you through a lengthy setup during the initial signup, Constant Contact lets you get on board quickly and easily. Once you’re in, their onboarding process kicks in, guiding you through setting up your account at your own pace.

This approach allows you to become familiar with the platform’s features without feeling rushed. I really appreciate this method because it gives you the space to comfortably explore and customize settings, ensuring you’re ready to launch your campaigns effectively.

This thoughtful onboarding can make a big difference, especially if you’re new to email marketing.

2. Personalization and Templates

Rating for Personalization

5/5

When it comes to email marketing, personalization and templates are essential. This section explores Constant Contact’s offerings that help tailor your campaigns to fit your brand perfectly.

You’ll discover the simplicity of embedding your brand identity into every email and how this can significantly engage your audience.

Basic Personalization

When you start crafting your email campaigns with Constant Contact, adding a personal touch is straightforward. You can easily insert personalization variables, such as recipient names, both into your subject line and the body of your email.

Basic Personalization
Basic Personalization

This is done using the greeting tag, which pulls the recipient’s name from your contact list and integrates it seamlessly into your message. Personalizing your emails this way helps create a connection with your audience, making them feel recognized and valued.

It’s a simple yet effective method to enhance engagement and open rates, giving your email marketing efforts a more tailored and impactful approach.

Email Design Builder

Diving into the world of email design, Constant Contact offers an email design builder that’s quite user-friendly. You can use the drag-and-drop feature to add various elements to your emails, making it a breeze to customize layouts and create professional-looking campaigns that resonate with your audience.

Email Campaign Design Builder

However, it’s worth mentioning that despite promoting their Write with AI feature, it seems to be not working when I personally tried it out. Instead of generating fresh content, it’s just echoing back the prompts you input, which is a significant downside for something that’s being advertised as a game changer.

This hiccup aside, the overall design process with Constant Contact is straightforward, allowing you to put together an email that looks good and feels personal.

Email Templates

Constant Contact’s library of email templates is impressive. With a ton of options to choose from, you’re almost guaranteed to find a design that fits your campaign’s vibe. Whether it’s for a holiday greeting, a newsletter update, or a sales announcement, they’ve got you covered.

The flexibility doesn’t end there. You have the power to shape the future of their template offerings by submitting a product idea. If you have a concept that’s clever or useful, throw it their way.

They might just turn it into a template that you and others can use. This level of attention to user needs shows a commitment to variety and personalization that can really take your email marketing to the next level.

Brand Theme

Constant Contact takes personalization a step further with its brand theme capabilities. You can effortlessly set your brand’s look and feel by uploading logos and customizing your color scheme.

What stands out is their handy website scanning feature; it automatically imports your logo and sets a matching color palette based on your website’s design. This nifty tool saves time and maintains consistency across your marketing materials.

Brand Theme Setup

With Constant Contact, fine-tuning your brand theme is hassle-free. You have the flexibility to change colors or images after the fact, allowing for easy updates that keep your emails in line with your brand’s evolving style.

This adaptability is key in maintaining a consistent and professional look across all your email campaigns.

3. Subscription and Sign Up Forms

Rating for Sign-up Forms

4/5

In email marketing, subscription and sign-up forms are vital for capturing new contacts. We’ll explore how Constant Contact’s form options can enhance your site and discuss the straightforward process of creating custom landing pages, along with certain limitations regarding domain customization.

Embedded Sign-up Forms

With Constant Contact, you have a variety of embedded sign-up forms at your disposal. Whether you want a pop-up that grabs attention, a flyout that slides in with a prompt, an inline form that integrates smoothly with your content, or a banner that sits neatly at the edge of the page, there’s a style to suit your needs.

Signup Form Types

The customization doesn’t end there. You’re in control of the form fields to decide exactly what information you need from subscribers. The color of the form’s background and the button can also be changed to match your brand colors, ensuring a consistent look across your site.

Plus, embedding these forms is easy – just copy and paste the provided JavaScript code into your website’s HTML, and you’re set to start collecting email addresses. This makes for a functional and visually coherent subscriber experience on your site.

Sign-up Form Landing Page

If embedding forms directly into your website doesn’t fit the bill, or maybe you want to offer more sign-up avenues, Constant Contact has you covered with a dedicated sign-up form landing page. This stand-alone page is focused solely on gathering subscriber details, free from any distractions. It’s just you and the form.

Constant Contact Sign-up Landing Page

You can easily direct your audience to this landing page with a link, making it a breeze for them to join your email list. This approach is great for keeping things clean and straightforward, ensuring the sign-up process is as smooth as possible for your potential subscribers.

Plus, it’s an effective way to funnel sign-ups from various sources, all pointing to one dedicated destination.

Custom Landing Page

If you’re looking to create a custom landing page for a specific product, service, event, or even just a hub for your company information, Constant Contact provides a straightforward solution.

Custom Landing Page Templates

Although their selection is currently limited, with around six templates available, these templates serve as a solid starting point. The landing page editor utilizes a drag-and-drop interface, simplifying the design process for you.

However, it’s worth noting that at this time, you won’t be able to link these landing pages to a custom domain. Constant Contact assigns a branded URL to your page, but you can add a personalized slug to make it unique.

This limitation means you’ll be using a URL that clearly shows it’s hosted by Constant Contact, which might not be ideal for everyone’s branding needs.

4. Deliverability and Email Tools

Rating for Deliverability

4/5

Deliverability and email tools are critical to email marketing success. Here, we’ll discuss how Constant Contact’s features improve your reach and ensure compliance, allowing for seamless campaign launches. These tools are vital for achieving a high inbox placement rate.

Email Deliverability Report

When you’re sending out emails, knowing where they land is key to understanding the success of your campaigns. Constant Contact’s email deliverability report offers clear insights.

With Constant Contact, data shows that about 74.81% of those emails make it to the inbox, which is where you want them. A little over 21% might slip into the spam folder, and a small fraction, just under 4%, could bounce or not be delivered for various reasons.

These figures from emaildeliverabilityreport.com with nearly 380,000 emails sent highlight the importance of regularly checking your deliverability stats to keep your email strategy on target and effective.

Email Law Compliance

Staying on the right side of email marketing laws is crucial for any campaign, and with Constant Contact, you’re in the driver’s seat. There’s no strict compliance hurdle stopping you from starting your campaign, even if you’re using a free email service provider like Gmail.

This freedom means you can get your message out there fast, but remember, with great power comes great responsibility. It’s on you to ensure that every email sent meets legal standards like CAN-SPAM or GDPR, depending on your audience’s location.

Keep it above board, and you’ll not only avoid the spam folder but also build trust with your subscribers.

5. Integrations with Other Tools

Rating for Integrations

5/5

Constant Contact doesn’t just stand on its own; it plays well with others, too. It can be integrated with a wealth of apps and platforms that you’re probably already using.

From adding a sign-up form to your WordPress site to syncing your customer data with Salesforce, or connecting your eCommerce store through Shopify or WooCommerce, the possibilities are expansive.

Constant Contact Integrations

Plus, with Zapier in the mix, you can connect to over 6,000 integrations, making sure all your tools are talking to each other. These integrations are designed to streamline your processes, automate your workflows, and ensure your email marketing strategy works in harmony with the rest of your digital toolbox.

6. Customer Support and Knowledge Base

Rating for Customer Support

3/5

They have a help forum but I noticed that their experts that are answering concerns in the forum are not good enough. For example, I was searching how to use my own custom domain for my custom landing page.

An employee who responds has a problem understanding the context of the concern, and instead gives solutions about how to share your landing page on social media or email using the link.

Constant Contact Forum
Constant Contact Forum

The original author of the question rephrased her concern, then another Constant Contact employee replied explaining how to copy the link of your landing page and how to share it. I think they don’t know what a domain is.

This is a big drawback for a company like Constant Contact to provide this kind of customer support. One person then points out in a comment what the concern really is and then an administrator named Caitlyn finally gives an answer explaining that it’s not possible to use a custom domain.

I then personally reached out to their customer support and they were able to answer my questions accurately in less than 8 hours.

7. Analytics and Insights

Rating for Analytics

5/5

Analytics and insights are key to refining your email marketing campaigns. In this section, we’ll explore Constant Contact’s robust reporting features that offer detailed analytics on campaign performance and customer engagement.

We’ll also touch on how their intuitive survey form builder can enhance your data collection efforts.

Constant Contact Reporting

Constant Contact Reporting doesn’t just give you a bird’s-eye view; it lets you zoom in on the details. You’ll have a clear picture of how your emails are performing with email marketing KPIs like open rate, click rate, bounce rate, and device your recipients used to interact.

Beyond just numbers, you can track performance trends over time, seeing how your current efforts stack up against past results and industry standards. For a more granular look, the platform allows you to dive into the analytics for each contact, giving you insights into individual interactions.

And if you’re in the eCommerce space, integrating your shop with Constant Contact unlocks even more data. You can watch how your email campaigns directly influence your online store’s performance, tracking everything from click-through to purchase.

This integration is a game-changer, tying your marketing efforts to tangible sales results. With these tools, you’re equipped to craft not just good, but great email marketing strategies tailored to your audience’s behavior and your business’s specific needs.

Insightful Survey Form Builder

Constant Contact boosts your insight gathering with an intuitive survey form builder. It’s built right into the platform, so you can start crafting your survey as soon as you’re signed up. The drag-and-drop interface makes it a breeze.

Just pick your question types, from multiple-choice to open-ended responses, and drag them into place. You’ll have a professional-looking survey ready to go in minutes.

8. Automation and Scalability

Rating for Automation

4/5

Automation and scalability are vital in evolving your email marketing strategies with ease. In this section, we’ll break down how Constant Contact’s automation features save you time and keep you connected with your audience

From scheduling emails to integrating e-commerce platforms and managing social ads, we’ll cover the tools that help your campaigns grow with your business. Plus, we’ll touch on event management capabilities that streamline your event planning process.

Email Scheduling

Email scheduling with Constant Contact might leave you wanting more. You can set your emails to launch on a certain date and at a specific time, sure. But here’s the catch: it’s pegged to one time zone.

Constant Contact Schedule for Later
Constant Contact Schedule for Later

This isn’t ideal if your contacts are scattered around the world. Without the ability to adjust for each recipient’s local time, it’s like sending invitations with only your time in mind.

Some of your audience could be opening your email with their morning coffee, while others might find it buried in their inbox by the time they wake up. If you’re aiming for that perfect ‘ping’ moment across different continents, this limitation could be a spanner in the works.

Automation Builder

Constant Contact’s automation builder is a smart tool that reacts to how your recipients interact with your emails. With a few automation templates at your disposal, you can set up a sequence of actions based on whether they open an email, click a link, or ignore the message altogether.

Editing your automation flow is a snap with the drag and drop interface, letting you build complex email sequences with ease. And for the online retailers, Constant Contact’s got your back. You can hook it up to your Wix, WooCommerce, or Shopify store.

This means you can create automated emails that respond to how customers engage with your shop, like following up on an abandoned cart or sending a thank you message post-purchase. This level of automation creates a seamless experience for your customers and can help drive sales without extra legwork.

Social Media Ads and Google Ads

Constant Contact goes beyond email marketing by opening the doors to the world of social media. Imagine reaching out to your audience where they hang out, scroll, and interact every day.

You can now extend your marketing campaigns to Facebook and Instagram directly through Constant Contact. Setting up is straightforward, and all your ad expenses go through your established Facebook payment method, keeping things tidy.

But that’s not all. They’re also in the game of Google ads, powered by Kliken, to help you boost your presence on the world’s biggest search engine. Whether it’s social media buzz or search engine presence you’re after, Constant Contact has the tools to scale up your marketing and get you noticed.

Social Media Management

With Constant Contact, your social media management is integrated into the same platform where you handle your email campaigns. This integration means less juggling between tools; you can create, manage, and schedule your social media content directly.

Create a social media post
